Nusco

Nusco

The diocese of Nusco was founded in the second half of the 11th century through an agreement between the Norman leader Robert Guiscard and Archbishop Alfanus I of Salerno. It covered the territory that had formed part of the Lombard gastaldate of Montella, namely the towns of Nusco, Bagnoli Irpino, Cassano Irpino and Montella itself. Its first bishop was St Amatus, a native of Nusco, chosen in 1076 for his loyalty and moral virtues. Through his pastoral work, he helped make the town an important religious centre. In 1818 the diocese absorbed the territory of the suppressed diocese of Montemarano. In 1973, under Bishop Gastone Mojaisky-Perelli, the diocese of Nusco was united in persona episcopi with the archdiocese of Conza, Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi and Bisaccia.
