Montemarano

Montemarano

The diocese of Montemarano, established in the 11th century, is first mentioned in 1058 as a suffragan of Benevento. Among its first bishops was St John (1084–1095), patron saint of the town. After centuries of fragmentary records, the 16th century brought a revival thanks to bishops such as Antonio Gaspar Rodriguez, Eleuterio Albergone and, above all, Celestino Labonia, known for his generosity and for the improvements he made to the cathedral and the bishop's palace. In 1818, with the reorganisation of the dioceses decreed by Pius VII, the diocese of Montemarano was suppressed and its territory incorporated into the diocese of Nusco.
