Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi — Primo piano

This Madonna and Child is among the oldest works in the Diocesan Museum.

It was carved in polychrome wood in the 17th century for the Cathedral of Sant'Angelo dei Lombardi. What strikes the viewer at once is the attention to detail, especially in the clothing. The Virgin's gown, decorated with flowers painted in gold on a red ground, is of rare beauty and recalls the festive dress of ordinary women. Her pale blue mantle draws the eye both for its decoration and for its drapery, which gathers into dense folds at the back, creating a remarkable visual effect.
