Pax
Here we see a pax. A pax is a small tablet used during the liturgy, which the celebrants kissed as a sign of reconciliation and communion.
This one is in embossed silver, framed by broad ornamental scrolls resting on two pedestals. The central oval shows a moving Pietà: the grieving Virgin supports the body of Christ, which is arranged to make the best use of the space. Behind the two figures rises a cross, flanked by a rocky landscape with small trees. It was made in the late 17th century by a Neapolitan craftsman of whom we know only the initial of his name, P.
