Baroque Chalice

Ignoto

XVIII secolo

Conza — Primo piano

Made between 1731 and 1759, during the episcopate of Giuseppe Nicolai, one of the most generous archbishops of the diocese of Conza, this chalice is a true masterpiece of church silver.

Entirely cast and bearing no hallmarks, the chalice displays Nicolai's coat of arms on its base. The stem seems almost alive with swirling movement: at its centre, sinuous scrolls intertwine with bunches of swaying ears of wheat, a symbol of the Eucharistic bread. The cup is decorated with scrolls framing medallions of vine tendrils and bunches of grapes, symbols of the Eucharistic sacrifice.
