Canne della Battaglia

16 km from Canosa lies the vast archaeological site of Canne della Battaglia (Cannae), where one of the major battles of the Second Punic War was fought in 216 BC. Hannibal, with his Carthaginian army and his legendary elephants, encircled and completely destroyed the Roman army. The extensive archaeological area is open to the public, together with its on-site museum.
